Water: We drink it, bath in it and swim in it; but is it safe? The University Physician’s Office monitors water safety for recreational areas including swimming pools and the canoe livery. Routine sampling of drinking water supplies are monitored to ensure its safety.
Public Swimming Pools
The University Physician’s Office evaluates swimming pool design, construction and operation to protect the public health, prevent the spread of disease and prevent accidents or premature deaths. Weekly bacteriological water samples are evaluated for safety.
Ground Water
More than 50,000 people daily utilize ground water distributed by the community water supply at Michigan State University. The water, provided by 17 different ground water wells distributed across campus, is pumped to a central location where disinfectant chemicals are added and then it is sent throughout campus for use. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: microbial, inorganic, pesticides/herbicides, radioactive, and organic chemical contaminates.
